How to set Static IP in Android Smartphone ?

WiFi is the mostly used feature in a smartphone, which may be Android, Windows Phone, Apple phone. It is available. When you try to connect to WiFi, sometimes you might have observed this message “Obtaining IP address..”. But you cannot connect to that network. Setting up a Static IP address on your Android Smartphone might be the solution to your problem.

What is Static IP? Why to set Static IP ?

Generally an ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) allocates an IP address or IP addresses to a home or office or school. When you try to connect to Network, what happens is, your device pings the IP address allocated to your device from the ISP. But sometimes, due to router settings or some other problems, your device cannot ping the IP address from router.

Here comes the term “Static IP“. Static IP, the name itself indicates an unchangeable constant IP address. You can get you IP address from your ISP. Also you must know the gateway link of your ISP. You can ask ISP for these details to set Static IP.

How to Set Static IP Address on Android Smartphone ?

Here is the step by step guide, to set static IP in any android smartphone. Just make sure that you have requirements provided below to get started.

Requirements :

  • IP address ( Ask your ISP )
  • Gateway IP ( Ask your ISP )
  • Mask ( 255.255.255.0 )
  • DNS network address ( Not mandatory )

Follow these step by step guide to set static ip on android phone :

Step 1 : Open App drawer or App list, and select “Settings”.

Step 2 : Open “Wireless Settings or WiFi Settings” depending on your device.

Step 3 : If your Android Version is below 4.0 , follow below procedure..

  • Turn on WiFi and open WiFi networks.
  • Tap on “Menu”, There you will find Advanced settings.
  • You will find Static IP option there.
  • Select it and enter below information.
  • IP address : Provided by your ISP.
  • Gateway : Provided by your ISP.
  • Net Mask : 255.255.255.0
  • Prefix length : 24
  • *DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
  • *DNS 2: 8.8.4.4

* Interesting point [Revealed] : You might have got doubt, Why these DNS servers only? You can find various DNS servers available on internet. But the above DNS severs are Google DNS servers, which are faster than any other DNS servers.

Step 4: If your Android Version is 4.0 and above. then follow these steps [ With Screenshots ]

  • Turn on WiFi and long tap on the network for which you want to have static IP.

  • Tap on “Modify Network”.

  • Then select “Show Advanced Settings”.

  • Select IP settings from DHCP to”Static” mode.
  • Fill the fields as shown below.

  • IP address : Provided by your ISP.
  • Gateway : Provided by your ISP.
  • Net Mask : 255.255.255.0
  • Prefix length : 24
  • *DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
  • *DNS 2: 8.8.4.4

Step 5: Click on save and you will get connected to the WiFi network, you want to connect.

Note that, For Android devices with lower than 4.0 version, you have to change or disable static ip when you want to connect to another network.

In this way you can connect to WiFi with static IP and can solve the WiFi problem showing ” Obtaining IP Address” message when connected to WiFi.
